NARASARAOPET, India: Doctors found pens in the stomach of a 33-year-old woman in Andhra Pradesh and removed 20 objects, including 14 pens, five wooden spoons and a candle.
The woman, from Petlurivaripalem village in Palnadu district, was brought to Maathasree Hospitals in Narasaraopet on September 5 after experiencing severe discomfort and chest and abdominal pain.
Diagnostic tests revealed multiple foreign objects in her stomach. Advanced laparoscopic surgeon Dr P. Ramachandra Reddy and his team then performed a procedure lasting about an hour to remove them.
The objects included 14 ballpoint pens, five small wooden spoons and one candle. One of the pens was missing its cap and had caused internal irritation.
Reuters footage subsequently showed the objects removed during the procedure. The longest pen measured about 25 centimetres, Reuters reported on September 18.

Dr Reddy said doctors could not immediately determine how the woman had managed to ingest so many objects. Her father told local media she had experienced mental health difficulties for about 10 years, although no specific diagnosis was publicly identified. Doctors said the woman was stable after surgery and recovering.
