Esteemed playwright and educator Shoaib Hashmi passes away at 84
Noted Pakistani intellectual, playwright, and educator Shoaib Hashmi passed away on Monday after a prolonged illness, confirmed by his son to a local publication. He was 84.
A celebrated figure in the world of theatre, Hashmi was renowned for his impactful contributions to Pakistan Television (PTV) with beloved shows such as Akkar Bakkar, Sach Gupp, and Taal Matol. He also had a distinguished academic background, earning a master’s degree in economics from Government College Lahore (GCL) and an MSc from the prestigious London School of Economics.
Hashmi honed his passion for the performing arts by studying theatre at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London. His dedication and talent were recognized with awards such as the Tamgha-i-Imtiaz and the esteemed President’s Award for Pride of Performance.
As the son-in-law of legendary poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz and husband of Salima Hashmi, he is survived by his son and daughter. Hashmi enthralled audiences with his captivating and humorous performances, always able to command attention.
His unassuming, warm, and humble personality was one of his most memorable traits. Yet, his multifaceted nature, evident across various media platforms, became his signature. Although Hashmi was a revered teacher and mentor, he will be best remembered for his pioneering and witty television productions pre-1990s and his humorous columns.
