A pregnant woman supposedly committed suicide after quarreling with her husband over an “inflated” electricity bill earlier today.

Samina Bibi, 50, of Kausarabad, Jhang Road, exchanged words with her husband, Abdul Wahid, who was jobless for a couple of months, after they received Rs4,525 electricity bill.

Following the quarrel, Samina swallowed poison.

As her condition worsened, Rescue 1122 personnel were called who shifted her to the Allied Hospital.

As she had eight-month pregnancy, the doctors saved her baby but the mother died.

Area people said the couple had frequent quarrels because of abject poverty.

Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (Fesco) spokesman Sheikh Tahir said the (Rs4,525) electricity bill of a meter installed in the name of Ghulam Muhammad was issued on consumption of 368 units.

He dispelled the “perception” that the woman committed suicide due to overbilling.

He said Fesco had started Mobile Meter Reading to end complaints of overbilling.

A picture of meter’s reading was being printed on the bills for satisfaction of the consumers, he added.
