Most city areas will face a five-day delay in water supply restoration due to a new leak in the main line near Karachi University along the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Red Line project on University Road.
Localities have experienced ongoing water outages this month following earlier ruptures in the same 84-inch main.
Starting today, the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) will begin repairs on the damaged section, to finish by Wednesday.
Residents in Clifton, Gulshan-i-Iqbal, and several other areas reported a two-week absence of tap water.
A burst in the main line has left the city short of 150 million gallons of water daily for two weeks, disrupting traffic significantly near Karachi University.
Although KWSC planned a 72-hour repair window, completion took a week due to additional nearby breaks, further delaying water restoration.
However, only two days post-restoration, another leak occurred, prompting another suspension until Wednesday.
KWSC Chief Executive Officer Salahuddin Ahmed, visiting the site on Sunday, confirmed completion by Wednesday.
He emphasized the emergency nature of the repairs and committed to meeting the deadline.
KWSC noted frequent damages to the 84-inch main during BRT construction activities.
Despite discussions with BRT authorities, issues persisted.
KWSC is now seeking Rs35 million from TransKarachi for repair costs, attributing the damage to negligence by the BRT Red Line contractor.
Salahuddin reported that two main sections were urgently repaired, but new leaks followed, necessitating more repairs.
KWSC had shared its infrastructure plans with BRT, yet damages continued.
TransKarachi has initiated an inquiry to investigate the contractor’s role in the recurrent issues and will decide the next steps based on the findings.
