During the 2024 US presidential race, donors contributed a staggering $4.7 billion to the campaigns of Donald Trump, Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, and their associated groups.
The funding total, confirmed through campaign finance reports released on December 5, underscores the substantial financial efforts backing each candidate from October 17 to November 25, per the latest filings.
The Democrats and their affiliated groups raised about $2.9 billion, surpassing the $1.8 billion gathered by the Republicans. Trump, together with the Republican National Committee (RNC), raised $1.2 billion from the launch of his campaign in November 2022 until election day. His key super PACs, including MAGA Inc and others, contributed an additional $849 million.
The Biden-Harris team, leveraging an early campaign start and a lack of Democratic primary competition, forged a joint fundraising partnership with the Democratic National Committee (DNC) early on, enabling them to amass significant funds. From the announcement of Biden’s re-election campaign in April 2023 to election day, they raised around $2 billion, with their main super PACs adding another $652 million.
Dark money played a crucial role in the election’s final weeks. Trump’s and Harris’s main super PACs relied heavily on funds from dark-money groups, raising concerns over transparency due to undisclosed donation sources.

MAGA Inc. collected $78 million in the campaign’s closing weeks, with $53 million coming from its dark-money affiliate. Similarly, the Harris-supporting super PAC Future Forward raised about $164 million during the same period, with over $128 million sourced from its dark-money nonprofit.
Future Forward USA Action, the group behind Harris’s support, raised over $900 million during the cycle, including $58 million in 2023 alone. In 2024, it funnelled these funds into the super PAC.
Post-election financial management is critical as campaigns navigate the challenges of potential debt versus unused funds. Trump’s campaign reported $11.4 million in unpaid bills but had $10 million in cash and receivables totalling $4.7 million. In contrast, despite facing criticism for a $20 million debt, the Harris campaign finished debt-free with $2 million on hand.
Elon Musk emerged as a significant donor, contributing $277 million through his entities to federal groups supporting Trump, including $238.7 million to America PAC, a super PAC he discreetly founded in 2024. Musk also funded RBG PAC with $20 million, aligning Trump with the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on abortion rights.
