At least three policemen were killed and six others injured during a search operation in Armarh area of the provincial capital earlier today.
Police suffered the casualties during a search operation in which a proclaimed offender was also killed in an exchange of fire.
The police said the officers came under attack from unknown gunmen hiding in a house.
The injured were taken to the Lady Reading Hospital. The police further said that a search operation was ongoing in the area to arrest the remaining attackers.
