At the Paris Olympics 2024, Refugee Olympic Team member B-Girl Manizha Talash was disqualified for displaying a “Free Afghan Women” message on her cape during her breaking routine.

Manizha Talash, 21, residing in Spain, aimed to highlight the plight of women under Taliban rule in Afghanistan with her message. However, the World DanceSport Federation disqualified her for breaching Olympic rules prohibiting political statements during competition.

A moment of history.

Since the Taliban’s resurgence in August 2021, Afghan women have endured severe restrictions, including barred access to education and public spaces. The International Olympic Committee has allowed Afghan athletes to compete under the Refugee Olympic Team but has not accredited any Taliban officials for the Games.

In other Olympic news, Imane Khelif of Algeria won the women’s boxing gold medal in the 66kg category at Paris 2024, defeating Chinese world champion Yang Liu 5-0. This victory was particularly significant as Khelif became the first woman from Africa and the Arab world to win an Olympic gold medal in boxing. Her win followed a disqualification at the previous year’s World Championships due to a gender eligibility controversy.

From @TheAthletic: An Olympic refugee team breakdancer used the first breaking battle in Olympic history to deliver a message to her home country.

Throughout the match, Khelif demonstrated superior technique and control, decisively winning each round against Liu, backed by strong crowd support. Her performance culminated in unanimous approval from the judges, confirming her gold medal victory and sparking celebrations among her supporters.
