Fawad Chaudhry, senior vice president of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), announced that the party’s leadership had endorsed the dissolution of the provincial assemblies in both Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
“As you are all aware, we are dissolving assemblies. Therefore, the top party leadership has endorsed the decision to dissolve the assembly, “Chaudhry told Lahore journalists.
Imran Khan, chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), canceled the long march to Islamabad last week and said that his party and collation partner (PML-Q) would leave the assemblies to opt out of the “corrupt system.”
In today’s press conference, Chaudhry stated that Khan had spoken with KP Chief Minister Mahmood Khan and that Khan will meet with CM Elahi later this week.
He stated, “The meetings of the parliamentary parties of both legislatures have been called for later this week, after which the assemblies will be dissolved.”
Chaudhry stated that the PTI has initiated allocating tickets to politicians and that as the party’s legislators retire from their respective assemblies, 563 seats will be vacated, and elections will be held on them.
He said the opposition would also be invited to consult with the administration in both provinces regarding the interim government’s formation.
Chaudhry stated that even if elections are scheduled in seven to eight months, it will have little effect on the PTI due to the party’s popularity; however, the party desires political stability, which early elections can only obtain.
“Therefore, [Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif] should announce the election date and dissolve the National Assembly. However, if you do not comply, the PTI will disband the assemblies wherever it dominates.”
In the next two to three days, the PTI will announce the date of the dissolution of the Punjab and KP assemblies, according to Chaudhry.
