President Mamnoon Hussain said continuity of democracy is important for the country’s progress and stressed that all state institutions must work within the constitutional ambit.

“Democracy and the sovereignty of law and Constitution are the present and future of Pakistan,” Mamnoon said in his address to the joint sitting of the National Assembly and Senate here at the Parliament House.

He said democracy was not about pursuing confrontation, conflict and revenge but rather about promoting affinity, tolerance, forgiveness and mutual cooperation.

“Democracy is about respecting the majority, preferring national institutions over personalities and prioritizing national interests over political interests.”

In his constitutionally mandated address, the president congratulated the two Houses of parliament on the completion of the parliament’s first year.
