Beginning January 1, 2025, Android devices running the KitKat system or earlier will no longer support WhatsApp, Meta’s messaging platform, to boost security and enhance app performance.
IOL reports that WhatsApp consistently adopts innovations, including encryption updates, support for multiple devices, enhanced video calling options, and AI features, all of which require superior hardware and software capabilities.
Older Android devices, due to their limited technological support, have difficulty effectively integrating these new features. Additionally, they can no longer sufficiently secure user data because they cannot receive ongoing software and security updates, rendering them more vulnerable to cyber threats.

As a result, the functionality of WhatsApp on these older models is compromised, prompting the discontinuation of service on specific devices from 2025. The list of affected Android devices includes:
- Samsung: Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, Galaxy S4 Mini
- Motorola: Moto G (1st Gen), Razr HD, Moto E 2014
- HTC: One X, One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601
- LG: Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, L90
- Sony: Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, Xperia V
Additionally, owners of older iPhone models will face a similar situation. WhatsApp will cease support for iPhones running iOS 15.1 or lower starting May 5, 2025. This affects iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus users, who will need to either upgrade their hardware or update to a newer version of iOS to continue using WhatsApp.
