Interim Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar was caught off guard by incisive questions from students during his session at the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) on Monday.
The event, meant to foster open dialogue, swiftly transformed into an intense Q&A. Students challenged Kakar with queries about the nation’s declining economy, with one student boldly asking, “Why did you feel the need to come and address amid declining economy?”
Kakar, attempting to motivate the students, encouraged them to pursue their ambitions fearlessly. However, he found himself on the defensive, especially when discussing election outcomes suspected of rigging. He stated, “Pakistan’s democracy was in the transitional period,” referencing controversial election incidents. Admitting his involvement, he said, “It [Pakistan’s democracy] had not been a settled one like that of a European country where the democratic system had taken shape.”
Social Media Buzz and Student Reactions
Despite facing intense scrutiny, PM Kakar remained relatively composed. Yet, his appearance wasn’t without criticism, as some students lamented his tardiness. Clips from the event rapidly spread across social media, highlighting LUMS students’ audacity in confronting the leader. Some attributed the courage exhibited by these students to the influence of former PM Imran Khan.
Addressing the delay in Punjab and K-P polls, Kakar clarified that it wasn’t related to the interim set-up’s tenure. He pointed to Article 254 of the Constitution, emphasizing that delaying legal time requirements doesn’t invalidate an action. He clarified the caretaker government’s role and stated, “It is the mandate of the ECP and not of the Caretaker Prime Minister to set a date for the general elections,” promising to support the ECP’s endeavors.
In response to concerns over Afghan nationals, Kakar highlighted the efforts made by Pakistan in hosting registered Afghan refugees for decades. He urged for the dignified repatriation of vulnerable groups, drawing parallels to the treatment of immigrants in the Mediterranean Sea.
