Zach Cregger’s “Resident Evil” box office debut reached an estimated $60 million in North America, giving the Sony horror film the biggest opening weekend in franchise history.
The September 18 release opened in 3,684 theatres in the United States and Canada and added $48.3 million internationally, bringing its estimated worldwide launch to $108.3 million.
The result also set a new opening record for director Zach Cregger, surpassing the $43.5 million North American debut of his 2025 horror film “Weapons.”
The franchise’s previous opening-weekend benchmark belonged to 2010’s “Resident Evil: Afterlife,” which debuted with about $26.6 million domestically. “Afterlife” ultimately earned roughly $60 million during its entire North American theatrical run.
Cregger’s film follows Bryan, a medical courier played by Austin Abrams, who becomes trapped in a viral outbreak in Raccoon City. Zach Cherry, Kali Reis and Paul Walter Hauser are also among the cast.

The reboot has also received strong early reviews. Rotten Tomatoes listed it at 95% from critics and 91% from verified audiences as of September 21, while AP reported a B+ CinemaScore.
The film had an estimated $75 million production budget before marketing, according to AP.
