Nintendo has paused U.S. pre-orders for its highly anticipated Switch 2 console, originally scheduled for April 9, 2025.
The Japanese gaming giant announced on Friday that it is postponing the rollout of its new product to evaluate the potential effects of new U.S. tariffs. “We are assessing the possible impact of tariffs and market changes,” the company stated, promising to provide an updated timeline later. However, the launch date for the Switch 2, set for June 5, remains unchanged.

The decision comes in response to President Donald Trump’s recent tariffs on foreign goods, particularly targeting Asia, where Nintendo’s manufacturing is primarily based. Priced at $449.99, the Switch 2 builds on the success of its 2017 predecessor, which ranks as the third-best-selling console in the world. The new console features upgraded Joy-Con 2 controllers that can also function as precision mice. It effectively blends portable and home gaming, boasting more powerful hardware and an exciting lineup of new games.

The delay poses a challenge for American fans eager to secure their orders. Nintendo’s pause highlights larger concerns within the tech industry, particularly regarding the pressures on Asian supply chains from tariffs.
Although the launch remains on schedule, this issue with pre-orders could dampen the excitement surrounding the next-generation hybrid console.
