Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham called for greater unity within the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA), acknowledging that players do not share the same views on every issue.
Cunningham made the remarks during an appearance on comedian Theo Von’s “This Past Weekend” podcast. Episode 692 was released on Wednesday in the US and covered her experiences in the league, public attention and player pay.
Asked about players taking public positions, she described a league whose members support different causes and approach issues from different backgrounds. She acknowledged that those differences mean players are not always aligned. “I think we need more unifying,” Cunningham said.
During the conversation, she discussed her decision to participate in national anthem ceremonies. Cunningham linked that choice to relatives who had served in the military and her wish to recognise veterans and serving personnel.
However, she acknowledged that other players did not necessarily share her position. She described teams remaining off court during the anthem as something that had happened throughout the season, rather than a new development. Her comments arrive during an offseason of change for Indiana.
Cunningham is an unrestricted free agent after completing the 2026 season with the Fever. Her future is among the roster decisions facing the organisation after changes to its senior leadership.

Indiana announced the departure of chief operating officer and general manager Amber Cox, while team president Kelly Krauskopf stepped down.
In separate comments about those departures, Cunningham praised both executives for caring about players beyond basketball. She hoped Indiana would appoint capable replacements and wished Cox and Krauskopf well.
The Fever finished their season with a first-round playoff defeat by the Las Vegas Aces.
