Punjab summer vacation may run from May 22 to August 2 as the provincial government reviews holiday dates for educational institutions, Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat said Saturday. Body paragraphs
Punjab Minister for School and Higher Education Rana Sikandar Hayat said officials would make a final decision by May 11. He said the Punjab government was also discussing a proposal to arrange summer camps during the holidays.
Hayat’s remarks came after the Punjab Disaster Management Authority warned of above-normal temperatures and rain across the province till July. The PDMA said May could bring heat spikes and heatwaves, especially in the plains of Punjab.
The Met Office cautioned that heatwaves, flash floods, urban flooding and windstorms could affect several regions in the coming months. The weather department also warned that rising temperatures could trigger strong winds, dust storms and hailstorms.
Officials said those weather conditions could affect seasonal crops, vegetables and orchards across the province. The warnings have added urgency to the Punjab government’s review of school holiday timing.
Last year, the provincial government announced summer vacation in schools from May 28 to August 14. Authorities later extended the holidays for all public and private schools until August 31 due to extreme weather conditions.
