Maverick Carter rejected comparisons between a reported LeBron James documentary and The Last Dance, saying the Philadelphia 76ers star has not decided when to end his NBA career.
“We are NOT doing anything like the ‘Last Dance.’ LeBron doesn’t even know when his last season is,” James’ longtime business partner wrote on X on Thursday.
Carter responded after The Athletic reported that James and ESPN were close to agreeing on a behind-the-scenes documentary series. An unnamed source described the negotiations as being at the “1-yard line.”
The proposed project would reportedly follow the 41-year-old during his first season with the 76ers. It would also feature archival material and previously unseen footage spanning his NBA career.
Neither ESPN nor James’ representatives have formally announced the series. The Athletic also reported that the parties had not set a production schedule or release date.

James signed a two-year, $8 million contract with Philadelphia after eight seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers. He is entering his 24th NBA season and pursuing a fifth championship.
Michael Jordan’s 10-part The Last Dance series followed the Chicago Bulls’ 1997–98 championship season. Its original broadcasts averaged 5.6 million viewers, making it ESPN’s most-watched documentary content.
