A Jazan refinery attack by Yemen’s Houthi movement sparked a fire at Saudi Aramco’s facility in southwestern Saudi Arabia on Sunday, August 9. Saudi authorities said crews extinguished the fire and reported no injuries.

Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said on X that the group used a drone to target the refinery. The Saudi Energy Ministry confirmed the fire but did not publicly state its cause.

The Jazan refinery processes about 400,000 barrels of crude oil per day. It produces gasoline and ultra-low sulfur diesel, according to the source.

Saudi Aramco President and CEO Amin Nasser said recent attacks had caused some production interruptions. He said the company expected to restore operations quickly and saw no material financial impact.

The refinery had also shut down temporarily after a July 27 attack damaged its Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle complex and tank farm, according to an IIR consultancy note cited by Reuters in the supplied material.

The latest strike came two days after Saudi Arabia signed a defence agreement with Pakistan and Turkiye. The accord states that an armed attack on one member would be treated as an attack on all three.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said the pact was not directed against Iran or another country. He said the three allies would consult on the form and extent of support after any attack.

The supplied source did not establish whether Pakistan or Turkiye would take part in any Saudi response to the Jazan attack.
