ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates: The UAE blamed Iran for an ADNOC vessel attack involving a missile in Hormuz on Saturday.

No crew members suffered injuries, state news agency WAM said. ADNOC said a missile targeted the carrier while it crossed the Strait of Hormuz during Saturday’s early hours.

The company said it had the situation under control but disclosed no details about the vessel, cargo or possible damage. WAM published ADNOC’s initial confirmation at 2:20 pm GST.

The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued its condemnation. The ministry said the attack violated United Nations Security Council Resolution 2817 on freedom of navigation.

It accused Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of committing “acts of piracy” against commercial shipping. The UAE demanded that Iran halt the attacks and reopen the strait fully and unconditionally.

Iran’s Guards had previously threatened vessels linked to Tehran’s adversaries or ships that rejected Iranian directives, Reuters reported.

Separately, ADNOC said Friday that missile and drone attacks had hit 15 vessels since the conflict began on February 28. ADNOC counted three attacks that week; those incidents killed one crew member and injured 20 others.

However, that tally preceded Saturday’s strike and did not establish whether the latest incident fell within the count. ADNOC did not assign responsibility for those earlier attacks.

The US-Israeli war against Iran has repeatedly disrupted Hormuz shipping, raising freight rates and maritime-security concerns, Reuters said.

Before the conflict, about one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas passed through the narrow waterway. The strait runs between Oman and Iran and links Gulf energy exporters with global markets.
