A Najran Houthi attack wounded 11 civilians in southern Saudi Arabia on Thursday, the Saudi military said, with a Pakistani national among those injured.

Major General Turki al-Maliki, spokesman for the Saudi-led coalition supporting Yemen’s internationally recognised government, said the casualties included seven Saudis, one Yemeni, two Egyptians and one Pakistani. A four-year-old child suffered second-degree burns.

Al-Maliki accused Yemen’s Houthis of targeting civilian areas and said the coalition would continue measures to protect civilians. The Houthis did not immediately comment on the Najran incident, according to the initial reports.

The attack marked a renewed escalation along the Saudi-Yemen frontier after years of reduced cross-border fighting following the 2022 truce. Houthi forces also launched missile and drone attacks against Saudi-backed forces in Yemen’s Marib and Hadramout provinces.

The incident carried a direct Pakistan connection because one Pakistani national was among those injured. Pakistan had already reaffirmed in July that its existing mutual defence commitments with Saudi Arabia remained in force.

On Friday, August 7, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Türkiye also signed a new mutual defence agreement during talks involving Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
