In a landmark ruling that shocked the globe, a French court on Thursday found all 51 defendants guilty in a disturbing drugging-and-rape case, casting the spotlight on the victim, Gisele Pelicot, who has become an iconic figure of bravery and perseverance.
Gisele’s former spouse confessed to drugging her for nearly a decade to facilitate her rape by numerous men he met online, all of whom were unaware of her unconscious state. Dominique also recorded this prolonged abuse on video.
The Avignon court sentenced 72-year-old Dominique to a maximum of 20 years in prison, as the prosecution had requested. The sentences for the other defendants ranged from four to 18 years, mostly for raping the comatose Gisele, with two convictions for attempted rape and two for sexual assault.

Outside the courthouse, Gisele’s supporters cheered the verdict. Several defendants claimed innocence, arguing their actions were consensual games agreed upon by the couple. In contrast, Dominique insisted he did not deceive the men, asserting they were aware of their actions.
In a powerful move, Gisele waived her right to anonymity to show the court the disturbing videos of the abuse, hoping it would encourage other victims to speak out. The trial has not only supported Gisele but also ignited nationwide protests and debates about revising France’s rape laws to emphasize the necessity of consent.
Displaying formidable resolve, Gisele faced her abusers in court, dismissing any suggestion of her willing involvement. “I’ve decided not to be ashamed; I’ve done nothing wrong,” she declared, stressing that the perpetrators should feel the shame instead.

The revelations have deeply affected the Pelicot family, with Gisele’s children openly denouncing their father and dismissing his apologies. The defendants, from various backgrounds, including truck drivers, soldiers, and journalists, mostly lived near the Pelicot’s home in Mazan, a village surrounded by vineyards.
In 2020, Dominique was apprehended while trying to take inappropriate photos in a supermarket and later discovered over 20,000 photos and videos on his devices, exposing a decade of hidden abuse.
Dominique admitted to using tranquillizers to incapacitate Gisele, who feared she was suffering from Alzheimer’s due to her memory lapses. Gisele has expressed hope that the widespread attention her case has received will aid other sexual abuse survivors. She attributes her actions to a steadfast desire to effect change, emphasizing, “This is not just my battle, but that of all rape victims.”
