Paraguay beat Germany 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 in Foxborough on Monday.

The result gave Germany its first defeat in a World Cup penalty shootout and sent Paraguay into the last 16.

Julio Enciso put Paraguay ahead in the 42nd minute after Matías Galarza crossed into the box. Kai Havertz equalised for Germany in the 52nd minute when he headed Florian Wirtz’s long pass into the corner.

Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill made two major saves in the shootout to deny Germany. Jonathan Tah later missed his penalty after seeing a 102nd-minute header disallowed for goalkeeper interference.

Germany had pushed late in extra time, with Waldemar Anton forcing a save from a straight header in the 118th minute.

The Guardian reported that Paraguay reached the last 16 despite Germany controlling much of the ball.

Germany entered the match ranked 10th in the world and had lost to Ecuador in their final group-stage game.
