Bushra Bibi has returned to Adiala jail after undergoing eye surgery in Rawalpindi for retinal detachment. The development came after prison-linked sources said she reported impaired vision in her right eye, prompting an urgent specialist examination and immediate treatment.
Bushra Bibi was moved to a private hospital on the evening of April 16, where doctors completed pre-operative tests before carrying out the procedure. It adds that Dr Nadeem Qureshi and a medical panel performed the surgery, after which she stayed overnight and was later shifted back to Adiala jail in stable condition.
Her family members, including her daughter, son-in-law, and sister-in-law, were later allowed to meet her at the prison. Her sister, Mariam Riaz Watto, had earlier posted on X that the family had been called to the hospital and that Bushra was expected to undergo surgery.
The operation came after weeks of political concern over Bushra Bibi’s eyesight. Earlier reporting in late March said PTI had raised an alarm over her eye condition and demanded her transfer from jail for treatment.
PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan also confirmed her hospitalisation, and called for immediate family access for both Bushra Bibi and Imran Khan. He said access to medical care and family visits are fundamental legal rights, especially in serious health cases.
Imran Khan’s Eye Condition Remains Part Of The Story
Bushra Bibi’s case continues to raise medical concerns surrounding Imran Khan. It says Khan has been diagnosed with central retinal vein occlusion, or CRVO, and has complained of losing 85% of vision in his right eye.
Current public reporting indicates that Khan’s eye condition became the subject of court-monitored medical review earlier this year. Dawn reported in March that a medical team examined him at Adiala jail on the Islamabad High Court’s directions, while Geo and ARY reported that he later underwent a third-eye procedure at Pims.
Doctors at Pims have performed multiple eye procedures, including anti-VEGF intravitreal injections, and a five-member medical board also examined him at Adiala jail. It further notes that the Islamabad High Court ordered health monitoring through a medical board but rejected petitions seeking his transfer to a private hospital.

The case remains politically sensitive because Bushra Bibi and Imran Khan are both in custody while PTI continues to raise concerns about access, treatment, and family meetings. Bushra Bibi was arrested in January 2025 and, later, along with Imran Khan, was sentenced in the Toshakhana-2 case in December 2025.
Information Minister Attaullah Tarar confirmed that a blanket ban on meetings with Imran Khan has remained in effect since December 2025. Against that backdrop, Bushra Bibi’s surgery has become more than a medical update. It now sits inside a wider dispute over prison access, legal rights, and the health of two of Pakistan’s most closely watched political detainees.
