For the fourth consecutive week, Warner Bros’ blockbuster “Barbie” has dominated the North American box offices, as highlighted by recent industry estimates. Under the direction of Greta Gerwig, the film continues to set unprecedented benchmarks. Previously, Gerwig made history by being the first solo female director to surpass $1 billion at the global box office with “Barbie”. According to The Hollywood Reporter, she has been crowned the highest-grossing female director ever in the domestic market.
As of this weekend, “Barbie” secured an additional $33.7 million, propelling its domestic earnings to an impressive $526 million. Competing closely with Jennifer Lee of Disney’s “Frozen” sequel fame, Gerwig is on the path to being recognized as the top-earning female director globally. With notable performances by Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, “Barbie” has accumulated a staggering $1.2 billion globally.
Hollywood Box Office Roundup Amid Industry Strikes
Against these box office triumphs, Hollywood is currently grappling with significant challenges. A historic double strike by both writers and actors has put a temporary halt on several productions. The strikes stem from both unions striving to renegotiate their collective contracts, which include demands for better pay, limitations on artificial intelligence utilization, and improved working conditions. Due to the strike, actors are currently barred from promoting their films, causing further uncertainty in future marketing efforts.
Meanwhile, this weekend saw Paramount’s “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” ascend to third place with $15.8 million. However, Universal’s debut horror film, “The Last Voyage of the Demeter,” faced a dismal opening weekend, securing only $6.5 million. David A Gross, an industry analyst, commented on its weak performance, especially given its roots in the legendary Dracula tale. With a substantial budget of $45 million and less-than-favourable reviews, the film has struggled in the market.
The top ten films were rounded off by titles including “Haunted Mansion,” “Talk to Me,” “Sound of Freedom,” “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One,” and “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny”.
