WOW TV Shuts Down, Moves to YouTube TV

WOW shutting down TV service marks a major shift for one of the country’s largest regional cable providers, as WOW! (WideOpenWest) prepares to move its entire TV customer base to YouTube TV by June 30, 2026. The decision signals one of the clearest examples yet of a traditional cable operator surrendering fully to streaming.

WOW has confirmed that it will retire its own cable and streaming TV products and adopt YouTube TV as its bundled video solution for all subscribers. The company serves about 1.9 million homes across Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, and parts of the South, making this a significant change for regional viewers.

Although WOW only formalised the move now, the transition has been in the works since 2023, with a phased shutdown now underway.

Despite its large customer footprint, WOW plans to abandon its proprietary cable and streaming platforms in favour of a broadband-first strategy. In practice, this means the company will focus on selling high-speed internet while relying on YouTube TV to deliver live channels and cloud DVR features.

WOW had already partnered with YouTube TV years earlier, but this final phase completes the shift away from running its own TV infrastructure.

What Happens to WOW TV+ and Cable Boxes?

For customers on WOW TV+, the company’s app-based streaming service that competes with platforms like Sling and Fubo, the change will be immediate. WOW TV+ will shut down entirely on June 30, 2026, and affected users will be moved over to YouTube TV on that date.

For traditional cable subscribers still using physical equipment such as set-top boxes and Ultra TV DVR devices, the shutdown will be staggered. The phase-out begins in April 2026, and WOW says all legacy devices will eventually stop working. Customers will need to rely on internet connections and compatible streaming hardware going forward.

Amid the disruption, WOW is trying to ease the transition with discounted YouTube TV bundles. Some customers have reported promotional rates as low as 10 dollars per month during the first year of service, depending on their specific plan and eligibility.

As of March 2026, YouTube TV’s base plan costs 82.99 dollars per month. It includes more than 100 channels, unlimited cloud DVR, and support for up to six accounts per household, giving former WOW TV customers a comparable, fully streaming-based alternative.
