On August 6, 2025, WhatsApp announced new features to protect its users from scams, reinforcing its commitment to online safety. As reported on Meta’s website, the platform has removed over 6.8 million accounts linked to global scam operations and introduced tools to detect potential fraud in both group and individual chats.

A key feature is the safety overview for group chats, which notifies users when added to a group by an unknown contact. This tool displays critical group details, such as whether any members are in the user’s contact list, helping them assess the group’s legitimacy. Notifications are muted until users decide to stay or leave, reducing pressure to engage immediately. This feature addresses common scam tactics where fraudsters add users to deceptive groups.

To tackle scams in private messaging, WhatsApp is testing alerts for chats initiated by non-contacts. These notifications provide context about the sender, enabling users to evaluate the conversation’s safety before responding. Scammers often lure victims from other platforms to WhatsApp, and this feature aims to disrupt such tactics by promoting caution and transparency.

WhatsApp has partnered with OpenAI to target a scam operation in Cambodia, where fraudsters used ChatGPT to craft deceptive messages promoting fake likes, pyramid schemes, and cryptocurrency scams. Victims were redirected to Telegram for tasks like liking TikTok videos before being pressured into crypto investments. This collaboration underscores WhatsApp’s proactive approach to disrupting sophisticated scam networks.

User Safety Guidelines

WhatsApp encourages users to follow these safety practices:

  • Pause and Assess: Evaluate unfamiliar messages for legitimacy.
  • Question Urgency: Be wary of urgent requests, a common scam tactic.
  • Verify Identities: Confirm the sender’s identity via other communication channels, especially if claiming to be a friend or family member.

These guidelines aim to foster vigilance and protect users from falling victim to fraud.

WhatsApp’s anti-scam features and account removals reflect a robust response to the growing threat of online fraud. By enhancing user control and transparency, the platform strengthens trust and safety for its global user base. These updates could set a standard for other messaging apps.
