Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir left for Switzerland to attend the US-Iran-Switzerland talks in Bürgenstock on June 21, officials said.

The Prime Minister’s Office said both leaders would join technical-level discussions as a follow-up to the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding signed by Tehran and Washington.

The PMO said Shehbaz was accompanied by a high-level delegation, including Asim Munir, who was both the Chief of Defence Forces and the Chief of Army Staff.

Pakistan’s Foreign Office said representatives of the United States and Iran would join the talks. Mediators from Pakistan and Qatar would also participate in the discussions.

The Foreign Office said Pakistan would continue to facilitate the process as mediator. It said the talks were aimed at advancing understandings reached under the Islamabad MoU.

The United States and Iran electronically signed the MoU days earlier to end the conflict in the Middle East. It said US President Donald Trump announced the signing on June 15.

The agreement included provisions on reopening the Strait of Hormuz and lifting the US blockade on Iranian ports. Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signed on behalf of their countries, while Shehbaz signed as mediator.

Iranian state media said Tehran’s negotiating team had left for Switzerland. Foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei warned that the agreement was “in trouble” unless the other side took necessary measures.

US Vice President JD Vance said he expected to go to Switzerland soon for talks with Iran. Tehran’s high command had threatened to shut the Strait of Hormuz over alleged US and Israeli truce violations.
