CAMP DAVID, Maryland: U.S. President Donald Trump rejected Iran’s suspected role in the Minnesota cyberattack on July 31 and accused state officials of incompetence.

During a Cabinet meeting at Camp David, Trump said he did not believe Iran carried out the attacks against more than 30 municipal water systems.

He blamed Minnesota and singled out Democratic Governor Tim Walz, according to a Reuters report. However, Minnesota IT Services had not identified the attackers.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation, which opened an investigation, had also not publicly attributed the incidents to any country or group.

🇺🇸🇮🇷 Trump just shot down the Iran angle on that Minnesota water cyberattack:

“They blamed it on Iran. I don’t think so…

I blame it on Minnesota and its corrupt governor.” 😂

Reuters reported that a memo cited by Wired said the Minnesota Fusion Centre found the attacks aligned with an allegedly Iran-linked cyber sabotage campaign.

The New York Times separately cited unnamed U.S. and state officials who considered Iranian involvement probable.

The attacks occurred on July 26 and 27. Most affected systems experienced malicious activity involving technology used to remotely monitor or control equipment, according to the Associated Press.

Braham temporarily asked residents to conserve water after attackers disabled controls at its water plant. Plymouth said crews maintained manual operations during a communications outage. Neither city reported harm to drinking-water quality.

The FBI and the Environmental Protection Agency separately reported attacks against internet-facing programmable logic controllers in at least 7 states since July 27. Their July 30 alert did not identify the attackers.
