Fifteen-time major champion, Tiger Woods, has announced that he will not partake in the forthcoming Open Championship.
This would be Tiger Woods’s third consecutive major nonattendance, a decision confirmed by the tournament coordinators on Friday. Woods underwent ankle surgery in April following an early withdrawal from The Masters. This surgical intervention has prevented him from competing in the PGA Championship and the US Open this week.
In 2021, Woods sustained grave injuries to his leg in a car accident, an event that forced him to reconsider his participation in the four major championships that form the pinnacle of professional golfing events. Now, he is set to miss his third successive major championship – the 151st edition of the Open Championship, slated next month at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club in England.
A representative from the R&A disclosed to CNN, “We have been informed that Tiger will not be participating at Royal Liverpool. We wish him the best in his recovery journey.”
There is no definite timeline for Woods’ return to the professional golfing scene following his ankle surgery. The operation termed the “subtalar fusion procedure, ” addressed post-traumatic arthritis that developed in his ankle.
Even before The Masters, it was evident that Woods was struggling with mobility issues, and he was compelled to withdraw amid the third round due to an unfavorable start and a reaggravation of his foot condition, plantar fasciitis.
Woods made a laudable comeback to the sport after a hiatus that lasted for 17 months, during which he missed just one major tournament in 2022, the US Open. Woods was given an emotional send-off at the St. Andrews course in Scotland as a three-time Open Championship winner during the tournament last year. This might have marked his final appearance at this prestigious golfing event.
