WASHINGTON: Thomas Crooks FBI documents newly provided to the Senate have prompted Republican lawmakers to seek further disclosure about the July 2024 assassination attempt on President Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania.
Rep. Mike Kelly of Pennsylvania, who chaired the bipartisan House task force investigating the shooting, told Fox News that his panel did not receive some information now appearing in the records.
Fox News reported that the documents showed Crooks’ father, Matthew Crooks, searched in May 2024 for ways to prevent his son from accessing firearms.
A source familiar with the task force said lawmakers were unaware of that search during their investigation. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley is conducting a continuing inquiry.
Sen. Josh Hawley said the material reinforced his call for a fuller accounting of the security failures surrounding the shooting.
The bipartisan House task force released its final report in December 2024 after conducting 46 transcribed interviews and reviewing nearly 20,000 pages of documents.

It identified failures in planning, execution and leadership and issued 37 recommendations. The task force also documented outstanding issues. For material from federal agencies, the released transcripts included interviews with federal, state and local officials.

The FBI identified Crooks, then 20, as the gunman in the July 13, 2024, attack. The shooting injured Trump, killed attendee Corey Comperatore and wounded other spectators.
The FBI said in August 2024 that it had not determined a definitive motive and had found no credible evidence that Crooks acted with a co-conspirator.
