SKARDU, Gilgit-Baltistan: The Sohail Sakhi recovery on Broad Peak raised the number of bodies found to eight after a July 30 avalanche killed a 10-member international expedition, mountaineering officials said Thursday.

Alpine Club of Pakistan (ACP) member Naila Kiani said volunteers from Shigar located the Pakistani climber’s remains at an altitude of about 5,600 metres.

Kiani identified the volunteers as Muhammad Nadeem, Muhammad Bashir and Abuzar. She said they alerted other climbers before the group transported Sakhi’s body from Camp 1 to Broad Peak Base Camp.

ACP General Secretary Ayaz Shigri said Pakistan Army helicopters would airlift the body to Skardu when weather conditions allowed.

Shigri said two bodies remained on the mountain. Recovery work would resume after the weather improved and rescuers determined that avalanche conditions no longer posed an unacceptable risk.

The avalanche struck between Camp 2 and Camp 3 on July 30, cutting off contact with the expedition led by British-Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja. His company later confirmed that none of the 10 climbers survived.

The expedition included mountaineers from Pakistan, Nepal, Oman, China, Britain and the United States, according to the Associated Press.

Broad Peak, located near K2 in the Karakoram range, rises to 8,051 metres and is the world’s 12th-highest mountain.
