The Sindh Assembly rejects a separate province for Karachi, passing a resolution declaring the metropolis an integral and inseparable part of Sindh.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah tabled the resolution on Saturday. He condemned what he described as divisive statements calling for the breakup of Sindh or the detachment of Karachi.
Speaking on the floor of the House, the chief minister said any move to divide Sindh contradicts history, the Constitution, democratic values and the will of the people.
“This House unequivocally condemns and rejects any conspiracy aimed at division of Sindh or creation of a separate province comprising Karachi,” he stated.

Sindh Assembly Rejects Separate Province for Karachi Amid Political Debate
The Sindh Assembly rejects a separate province for Karachi in response to recent demands by the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P).
MQM-P leaders had called for Karachi to be declared a federal territory under Articles 148 and 149 of the Constitution. The demand followed the deadly Gul Plaza fire in January.
In a press conference on January 22, MQM-P leader and Federal Health Minister Mustafa Kamal raised the proposal after the blaze claimed at least 73 lives and injured dozens. The fire broke out on January 17 and took nearly two days to extinguish. Around 1,200 shops suffered damage.
Later, MQM-P leader Farooq Sattar urged Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari to remove the Sindh chief minister, the Karachi mayor and the senior provincial minister over the tragedy. He argued that if the provincial government could not fulfil its responsibilities, Karachi should be handed over to the Centre.
Murad Ali Shah reiterated that Karachi remains inseparable from Sindh. In a statement shared on his official social media account, he said the assembly had made Sindh’s unity clear.

“Sindh’s unity is sacred. Karachi is inseparable from Sindh, yesterday, today, and forever. We stand united for our homeland,” the post read.
The resolution reinforces the provincial government’s stance that Karachi’s constitutional and administrative status will remain unchanged.
The development comes amid broader debate over governance, accountability and urban management in Pakistan’s largest city.
