NEW BEDFORD: Republican Shawn Oliver suspended his campaign for Massachusetts lieutenant governor on Sunday after police charged him with drink-driving following a crash involving parked cars.
Police said Oliver’s vehicle struck several parked cars before overturning on Saturday night. Two parked vehicles sustained extensive damage. Oliver, a New Bedford city councillor and corrections officer, announced his decision on social media after his arrest.
“This election is too important to be overshadowed by personal matters,” he wrote. He thanked supporters and requested privacy for his family.
His running mate, Republican gubernatorial candidate Mike Minogue, had publicly urged him to suspend the campaign immediately. Minogue expressed disappointment over the arrest and criticised driving under the influence.

Although Minogue called for Oliver to stop campaigning, he also offered to help him seek support. He indicated that he would formally request Oliver’s resignation if their ticket won the election.
Police charged Oliver with operating under the influence of liquor, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, a marked lanes violation and speeding. He received hospital treatment for injuries before authorities booked him early on Sunday.
