Russia Responds to Kyiv’s ATACMS Use with ‘Massive’ Strike on Ukraine

Russia announced on Friday that it had conducted a missile strike on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure in retaliation to Kyiv’s deployment of US-supplied ATACMS missiles against a southern Russian airfield earlier this week.

According to Russia’s defence ministry, the strike targeted critical components of Ukraine’s fuel and energy facilities. The ministry’s statement, posted on Telegram, described the operation as a direct response to Ukraine’s use of advanced American weaponry.

Russian forces have reportedly advanced to within 1.5 km of the Ukrainian city of Pokrovsk. As indicated by open-source maps, this movement marks one of the swiftest progressions since the onset of the invasion in 2022. Pro-Russian war bloggers reported on Friday that special forces units have even entered strategic points within the city, which serves as a crucial road and rail hub.

Russia’s primary military focus is the Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine, where Moscow now controls over 60% of the territory. Capturing Pokrovsk is central to Russia’s strategy to disrupt Ukrainian supply lines and enhance its campaign toward Chasiv Yar, a city of strategic importance due to its elevated position.

Current Situation in Pokrovsk

Yuri Podolyaka, a Ukrainian-born, pro-Russian military blogger, confirmed the proximity of Russian forces to Pokrovsk. He noted that Russian reconnaissance and sabotage groups already operated within the city. Similar reports have emerged from other Russian war bloggers, though these battlefield accounts remain unverified due to reporting restrictions.

The Ukrainian military acknowledged on Wednesday that Russian forces had compromised several of their positions near Pokrovsk. However, Kyiv has not responded immediately regarding the latest advancements.

The conflict is reportedly entering a critical and potentially perilous phase, with both sides escalating their military engagements. This includes Ukraine’s strategic use of U.S.-made ATACMS missiles against targets within Russia, signalling a significant intensification in hostilities.

Russian Defence Minister Andrei Belousov recently visited the Eastern Grouping of Russian forces south of Kurakhove, close to Pokrovsk. According to Lieutenant General Andrei Ivanayev, this group has reportedly secured over 300 square kilometres in the past month.

Implications of Pokrovsk’s Fall

The potential capture of Pokrovsk, a vital logistical hub for the Ukrainian military, could represent one of Kyiv’s most significant military setbacks in recent months. It would severely restrict Ukrainian access to essential road networks, potentially altering the dynamics of the conflict significantly.

As the situation develops, Pokrovsk and its surrounding areas remain strategic foci in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, with significant implications for regional stability and international relations.
