The Pakistan power generation record in January 2026 was achieved despite severe weather conditions, plant outages and generation constraints. According to the Power Division, the national grid recorded its highest-ever January performance.

Peak electricity generation reached 16,584 megawatts (MW) during the month. Meanwhile, average generation stood at 12,239 MW. Total electricity production amounted to 9,106 gigawatt-hours (GWh).

This output exceeded the reference projection of 7,962 GWh by around 14 percent. It also marked a 13 percent increase compared to January 2025.

Officials stated that the milestone came despite multiple forced and partial outages across major plants.

These included a 1,040 MW forced outage at K-3 and a 1,180 MW forced outage at Haveli Bahadur Shah. Sahiwal Coal experienced partial and forced outages, while C-III underwent a 300 MW refuelling outage.

In addition, canal closures reduced hydropower availability. Dense fog caused transmission line trippings in both the northern and southern regions. A cold wave further increased electricity demand nationwide.

Despite these pressures, the grid operated under merit-order dispatch principles. Thermal resources were utilised optimally, while hydropower generation was managed within available water limits.

Authorities also monitored transmission corridors continuously and implemented enhanced security measures. These steps helped prevent cascading failures and widespread load management.
