New Zealand will expand its post-study visa eligibility from November 16, 2026, allowing more international graduates to remain and work after completing eligible qualifications.

Immigration New Zealand said the change will cover applicants who complete a Level 7 graduate diploma full-time in New Zealand and already hold a bachelor’s degree from New Zealand or another country.

The Post Study Work Visa currently allows eligible graduates to work in New Zealand for up to three years. Master’s and doctoral graduates who studied in the country for at least 30 weeks may receive the full three-year period. Other visa durations depend on the qualification and length of study.

As of July 14, 2026, applications cost NZD1,670, and Immigration New Zealand said 80% were processed within 5 weeks. Applicants must also show at least NZD5,000 for living expenses.

Graduates with a degree at Level 7 or above may work for any employer. Those holding an eligible non-degree qualification at Level 7 or below must work in a position related to their studies.

Most applicants must apply within 3 months of their student visa’s expiration. Doctoral graduates receive six months, while some students who immediately complete a higher qualification lasting under 30 weeks may apply within 12 months of the first visa’s expiry.

Applicants must provide evidence of their qualification, identity, funds, health and character. Approved applicants receive an electronic visa and may support eligible visa applications for a partner and dependent children.

The visa can support a later residence application, but permanent residence is not automatic and requires applicants to qualify under a separate immigration pathway. The supplied guidance also outlines the online application, document and arrival requirements.
