Morocco beat the Netherlands 3-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 in Monterrey on Monday.
Yassine Bounou saved Crysencio Summerville’s fourth Netherlands penalty before Ismael Saibari scored the winning spot-kick. The Netherlands took the lead through Cody Gakpo midway through the second half.
Gakpo scored after substitute Wout Weghorst flicked a long ball into Summerville’s path, with Summerville crossing for the Liverpool forward.
Morocco forced extra time in the first minute of stoppage time when Issa Diop headed in Chemsedine Talbi’s cross. Morocco had created better chances before the late equaliser.
Bart Verbruggen denied Neil el-Aynaoui from an Achraf Hakimi corner in the first half and later tipped Hakimi’s strike over the bar.
Bounou kept Morocco level before half-time by saving Micky van de Ven’s shot from the edge of the area.

Morocco almost scored in extra time, but Verbruggen stopped Soufiane Rahimi in the 96th minute. Five penalties were missed before Saibari converted the decisive kick.
Morocco will face Canada in Houston on Saturday in the last 16.
