LONDON: UK cinema operators are considering restrictions on Meta smart glasses and other camera-equipped eyewear due to concerns about film piracy and customer privacy.

The UK Cinema Association said individual operators were developing their own policies rather than adopting a single industry-wide ban. The trade body said cinemas must also consider accessibility benefits.

Smart glasses can offer features such as bespoke subtitles and assistance for people with visual impairment or hearing loss. Meanwhile, Meta’s Ray-Ban AI glasses are priced at £359.

Meta says the eyewear activates a flashing LED when recording. The company also uses tamper-detection technology designed to discourage users from covering the indicator.

However, complaints that people have been recorded without their knowledge have increased scrutiny of the devices.

Earlier this month, courts in England and Wales barred use of Meta smart glasses under existing restrictions on photographing or recording proceedings.

ATG Theatres has also said customers wearing the glasses during performances may be asked to remove them if they are used for filming.

Separately, Wetherspoons chief executive Tim Martin said the pub chain’s general policy prohibits filming customers or staff without permission.

The UK Cinema Association said it would continue working with its members to ensure that any restrictions remain proportionate as the technology evolves.
