Meta Platforms Inc. has officially acquired PlayAI, a promising artificial intelligence startup specialising in voice technology, as part of its ongoing push to strengthen its AI capabilities. The social media giant confirmed the acquisition but did not disclose the financial terms of the deal.

According to an internal memo obtained by Bloomberg, the entire PlayAI team will transition to Meta next week. The newly acquired talent will report to Johan Schalkwyk, Meta’s AI executive, who previously led another voice AI startup, Sesame AI Inc. This strategic hire demonstrates Meta’s serious commitment to advancing its voice technology capabilities.

The acquisition aligns perfectly with Meta’s intensified focus on artificial intelligence this year. The company has been making substantial investments in AI infrastructure, including specialised chips and data centres, while aggressively recruiting top talent in the field. CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently reorganised Meta’s AI division to accelerate the development of advanced AI models and features.

PlayAI’s expertise in creating natural-sounding voices and developing user-friendly voice creation platforms makes it particularly valuable to Meta’s roadmap. The startup’s technology is expected to enhance several Meta products and initiatives, including AI Characters, Meta AI, wearable devices, and audio content creation tools.

This move follows Bloomberg’s earlier report about acquisition talks between the two companies. While Meta declined to provide additional details about the deal, the internal memo emphasised the strategic fit between PlayAI’s capabilities and Meta’s AI objectives. The acquisition represents another step in Meta’s broader strategy to establish itself as a leader in artificial intelligence technologies.
