Melbourne, Australia: Victoria Police have arrested 51 people after 38 incidents linked to Melbourne arson attacks on hospitality venues, officials said.

Police launched Operation Eclipse after fires and firebombing attempts hit bars, restaurants and night venues across Melbourne. Bar Bambi faced three suspicious fires this month.

Two teenage boys were arrested after an alleged Bar Bambi attack last week. Police also cited five Molotov cocktails thrown at The George Hotel on May 2.

A suspected mastermind behind Melbourne’s nightclub firebombings is allegedly directing attacks from a bunker in Iraq.

Detective Superintendent Jason Kelly said police made 38 arrests “on the hop,” before offenders could complete attacks. He said police still have no clear motive.

Dr Lauren Ducat of Swinburne University of Technology said arson serves as a form of intimidation because it is fast and visible. She said unclear motives can harm confidence among owners, staff and patrons.
