SINGAPORE: Leylah Fernandez beat Australia’s Talia Gibson 7-5, 6-0 on Sunday to win the Singapore Open and claim her first title of the season.
The Canadian won the final nine games to complete the victory in one hour and 38 minutes. Fernandez hit five aces and converted six of 12 break-point opportunities.
She won 81.8% of her first-serve points in the second set. The world No. 31 entered the WTA 500 event as the sixth seed.
She lost only one set across five matches and beat top seed Mirra Andreeva in the quarterfinals. Sunday’s victory gave Fernandez her sixth singles title of the year. All six have come on hard courts.
She last won a title at the Japan Women’s Open last October. Fernandez now has two WTA 500 titles after winning the D.C. Open in July 2025.
