ORMARA, Balochistan: Pakistan’s Bureau of Air Safety Investigation has conducted an aerial survey of the K2 Airways crash area and may seek overseas specialists to recover key evidence from the deep Arabian Sea.

Officials familiar with the investigation said the team assessed how the Boeing 737 cargo aircraft descended from a significant altitude while returning from Sharjah to Karachi on July 7. Investigators also completed an initial review of available aircraft records.

The investigation team examined recovered wreckage and items found in a bag belonging to crew member Muhammad Hamid. The cause of the aircraft’s rapid descent remains undetermined.

Authorities are considering assistance from specialist international companies to locate the aircraft’s engines, flight recorders and five missing crew members on the seabed.

The aircraft reported a navigation-system problem before making a sudden turn and losing radar and radio contact during the Sharjah-Karachi flight, according to the Pakistan Airports Authority.

Pakistan Navy and civilian teams recovered debris after a 12-hour search. Authorities located the wreckage about 53 nautical miles south of Ormara, but officials said currents may have carried floating pieces away from the main impact site.

The search area is believed to be about 3,000 metres deep, requiring specialised equipment to recover the main wreckage and flight recorders. The five crew members remain unaccounted for.
