BAHRAICH: Police in India’s Uttar Pradesh brought a young woman safely down from a mobile tower on October 23 after a cleric conducted a nikah ceremony with her partner by video call.
Her partner joined remotely from Mumbai, where he was working. A local qazi conducted the Islamic marriage ceremony after the families discussed the couple’s wish to marry. The incident occurred in Chaudhary village in the Motipur police station area.
According to residents, the young woman climbed the tower after an argument with her mother over the relationship. Both families had initially opposed the marriage.
Police, including women officers, arrived after villagers tried to persuade her to descend. Negotiations continued for several hours as officers and relatives sought a safe resolution.
Those at the scene contacted her partner and brought in the cleric. After the ceremony, she agreed to come down with police assistance.
“After the nikah, she was brought down safely,” Motipur station house officer Brahmanand Gaur told The Times of India.

However, her mother continued to oppose the relationship after the rescue. Police subsequently took the young woman and her family to the station for counselling before sending her home. Gaur said further action would depend on whether police received a complaint.
