CONAKRY: A Guinea landfill collapse killed 30 people and injured 22 in Conakry early Sunday. This happened after heavy rain sent a huge mound of waste crashing onto nearby homes, the government said.
The collapse struck the Dar-es-Salam landfill in Conakry’s Gbessia commune at about 2:00 a.m. local time. Six people suffered serious injuries, and 16 were lightly injured, according to the government’s provisional toll.
Authorities deployed rescue teams and heavy machinery to search for people who may remain buried, recover bodies and assist survivors. Excavators worked through the collapsed waste after homes, tents and shacks were engulfed.
Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah visited the disaster site as emergency operations continued.

The disaster occurred days after authorities ordered residents to evacuate the area due to fears that the landfill could collapse. Furthermore, the government had announced plans to close the dump and relocate waste outside Conakry because of safety risks during the rainy season.
Opposition figure and former prime minister Cellou Dalein Diallo called for authorities to establish transparently how the disaster occurred. Rescue operations remained underway as officials assessed the site.
