Animated character Gromit recounts how Wallace found his name in a new book, “Grand: The Autobiography of Gromit”.
People has published an exclusive excerpt from the fictional memoir, which presents the dog’s account of their life together. The book credits franchise creator Nick Park, with James Goss.
In the passage, Wallace struggles to find a suitable name for his companion. After trying several possibilities, he considers Wensleydale during one of their shared cheese-and-cracker breaks.
However, he abandons that choice because it could confuse the dog with the cheese. Wallace then casually calls him Gromit while promising to keep searching. Both immediately recognise he’s found the answer.

The excerpt also follows Gromit’s early days in Wallace’s home. He first sleeps in a garden kennel before a storm prompts Wallace to bring him indoors and give him a room.
Meanwhile, the wider book explores their adventures from the canine character’s perspective. Aardman says it includes his experiences with the Techno Trousers, his views on garden gnomes and his account of the moon’s taste.

Park described the project as an opportunity to share Gromit’s private thoughts, calling it “a right riveting read”. The UK hardback arrives on Thursday, followed by Penguin Press’s US edition on October 27.
