ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday promoted General Aamer Raza to four-star rank and appointed him Commander of the National Strategic Command, the Prime Minister’s Office said.
General Raza was serving as Chief of the General Staff of the Pakistan Army before his promotion and appointment. The prime minister congratulated him and wished him success in assuming the new responsibility.
The federal government established the position through amendments to Pakistan’s Army, Air Force and Navy laws enacted in November 2025. The legislation also abolished the office of the Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, and introduced the National Strategic Command position within the revised military command structure.
Under the amended law, the prime minister may appoint the commander from among serving Pakistan Army generals on the recommendation of the Chief of the Army Staff, who concurrently serves as Chief of Defence Forces. The appointment carries a three-year term.
