On June 30, 2025, reports surfaced that Facebook is prompting users to share private camera roll media with Meta’s cloud servers to enable AI-powered Story suggestions. The opt-in feature, detailed by TechCrunch and The Verge, has sparked privacy concerns due to Meta AI’s analysis of facial features and media content.

When uploading Stories, some Facebook users now see a pop-up requesting access to their camera roll. According to TechCrunch, Meta aims to utilise this media to suggest AI-generated collages, restyling tools, and occasion-based posts, such as birthdays. The feature requires ongoing uploads of photos and videos to Meta’s cloud, analysing data such as time, location, and themes. While limited to media from the last 30 days for suggestions, themed content, such as pets or weddings, may include older files.

🚨 Facebook now asks to upload your phone photos—even unposted ones—to generate AI recaps, collages, and story ideas.

Say yes, and Meta can scan faces, locations, and more.

Meta’s AI terms reveal that uploaded media undergoes analysis for facial features, dates, and the presence of people or objects. This has raised concerns about user privacy. Meta’s communications manager, Maria Cubeta, told The Verge that the feature is entirely opt-in, with suggestions visible only to the user unless shared. Cubeta clarified that camera roll media improves suggestions but does not train Meta’s AI models. Public affairs manager Ryan Daniels emphasised that the media is not used for ad targeting, and users can disable the feature at any time.

The opt-in feature offers creative tools, but it requires users to strike a balance between convenience and privacy. By granting access, users allow Meta AI to process sensitive data, although Meta assures that strict privacy controls are in place. The ability to turn off the feature provides flexibility. Still, the analysis of facial and object data may deter some users wary of data security in an era of heightened digital privacy concerns.

Facebook’s camera roll access request reflects the growing integration of AI in social media, enhancing user experience while raising privacy questions. As Meta expands AI-driven features, transparency and user control are critical to maintaining trust. This development highlights the broader debate over data usage in the tech industry, affecting millions of users worldwide.
