The Sindh Local Government Department announced Dr. Saif-ur- Rehman’s appointment as the new administrator of Karachi.
After MQM-P nominated Rehman, the provincial government accepted Karachi Administrator Murtaza Wahab’s resignation.
“In exercise of powers, vested U/s 21(3) of Sindh Local Government Act, 2013 […] and with the approval of the competent authority, upon acceptance of resignation of Barrister Murtaza Wahab […] Dr. Syed Saif-urRehman, an officer of PAS (BS-20) […] is hereby appointed as Administrator, Karachi Metropolitan Corporation.”
Dr. Rehman’s appointment was effective immediately until further notice. He was the governor’s principal secretary.
Sindh Local Government Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah stated an MQM-P nominee would be nominated within days.
“We informed MQM-P that whoever they choose will be the new administrator,” the minister said.
MQM-P proposed Abdul Waseem if a political administrator is appointed as the new KMC chief and Dr. Rehman if a government officer is chosen.
The Pakistan People’s Party-led Sindh government approved the MQM-P nominee as part of a March agreement to overthrow Imran Khan’s cabinet.
The PPP committed to give the MQM-P greater space in Karachi’s administrative system, but the port city-based party says it hasn’t made any meaningful progress.
