Japanese researchers have unveiled an innovative AI system that deciphers the emotions of chickens.
Guided by Professor Adrian David Cheok from the University of Tokyo, this pioneering venture, termed “Deep Emotional Analysis Learning” (DEAL), represents a significant stride in scientific research.
But this isn’t just a whimsical study! DEAL has demonstrated its capability to discern a spectrum of emotions in chickens, from hunger and fear to contentment and excitement, by analyzing their vocalizations.
Expressing his excitement, Professor Cheok said, “Understanding animal emotions allows us to create a more compassionate environment for them.”
He envisions this insight ushering in enhanced welfare practices for our feathered friends.
The team collaborated with animal behaviour experts to validate DEAL and analyzed a group of 80 chickens. The results were remarkable, with DEAL exhibiting high accuracy in discerning the birds’ emotions.
However, certain challenges persist, such as varying responses across chicken breeds and the intricacies of body language.
Nevertheless, such AI advancements strengthen our comprehension of animals, paralleling AI’s role in conservation endeavours.
