Former Prime Minister and leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Nawaz Sharif, has pledged to tackle the issue of inflation if his party comes to power in the upcoming general elections. Sharif communicated his promise during a discussion with various PML-N delegations from Gulf countries in Dubai.
Sharif made a bold statement, expressing his conviction that the ruling PML-N will effectively address all the problems and difficulties the country’s citizens face.
Sharif, who has resided in London for health reasons since November 2019, along with his daughter Maryam Nawaz, landed in the UAE on June 24. They convened important meetings there, notably with Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) top leaders Asif Ali Zardari and Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari.
Topics Discussed with PPP Leaders
According to highly informed sources, these meetings dealt with pivotal issues, including the dissolution of assemblies, scheduling of general elections, and seat adjustment in Punjab. However, some matters remain unresolved following the interaction between Zardari and Nawaz.
There are claims that the PPP and the PML-N leadership are considering a “covenant economy.” This would aim to maintain a consistent economic policy direction, despite potential political shifts. However, there still appears to be a deadlock on several key issues.
Nawaz’s Potential Return to Pakistan
The recent amendment in the National Assembly, which now limits the disqualification of a parliamentarian to a maximum of five years, has sparked speculation about Nawaz’s return to Pakistan. This new law would enable those previously barred for life to run for public office again.
PML-N sources have indicated that the former prime minister could return to Pakistan soon. Nawaz Sharif and Istihkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP) chief Jahangir Khan Tareen, who were both disqualified for life by the Supreme Court in 2017 under Article 62(1)(f) of the Constitution, are expected to benefit from this legislative change.
