OpenAI has officially launched its latest artificial intelligence model, GPT-5.2. The release follows CEO Sam Altman’s reported internal “code red” in early December. This directive paused non-core projects to accelerate development. The move was a direct response to the competitive pressure from Google’s recently launched Gemini 3.

The new model brings significant improvements in several key areas. OpenAI stated GPT-5.2 enhances general intelligence, coding capabilities, and long-context understanding. The company expects it to deliver greater economic value for users. It is better at creating spreadsheets, building presentations, and managing complex, multi-step projects.

Alphabet’s Google launched its Gemini 3 model in November. Google highlighted its lead position on several major industry performance benchmarks. However, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman downplayed its immediate impact. “Gemini 3 has had less of an impact on our metrics than we feared,” Altman told CNBC on Thursday.

In a related announcement, The Walt Disney Company announced a $1 billion investment in OpenAI. As part of the partnership, Disney will allow OpenAI to use characters from its iconic franchises. These include Star Wars, Pixar, and Marvel characters within OpenAI’s Sora AI video generator.

OpenAI confirmed it has no plans to discontinue its previous models. GPT-5.1, GPT-5, and GPT-4.1 will remain available via its application programming interface (API). The rollout of GPT-5.2 will begin immediately for paying customers. The Instant, Thinking, and Pro versions will become available in ChatGPT starting Thursday.
